TGIJP Black Trans Cultural Center, Human Impact Partners, California Coalition for Women Prisons, and Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) released this report on the harm and violence of CA’s prisons for women, on March 2, 2023.

The 40-page report delves into the key demographics of incarcerated individuals in California’s women’s prisons, shedding light on the diverse groups affected by the state’s prison system. It highlights the multiple detrimental effects of imprisonment in California’s prisons, emphasizing the layered impact it has on individuals, families, and communities. The report goes further to propose solutions aimed at steering the state towards a more public health-oriented approach, advocating for a shift away from punitive measures and towards initiatives that promote safe, stable, and affordable housing, increased job opportunities, accessible healthcare, reliable transportation, and alternative forms of accountability that do not rely on incarceration.

By providing evidence-based recommendations, the report urges California to prioritize holistic strategies that address the root causes of crime and incarceration. It emphasizes the importance of investing in social support systems and community resources that can help prevent individuals from entering the cycle of imprisonment. By advocating for a paradigm shift towards a more compassionate and restorative justice approach, the report aims to foster a safer and more equitable society for all Californians.
