Our legal team supports our community based legal advocacy efforts. We establish an effective network for power building inside prisons, jails and detention centers, and in the community by:
- Passing legislation and engaging in budget advocacy
- Sharing legal information and resources with TGI people in locked facilities
- Collaborating with TGI leaders inside to fight human rights abuses inside prisons, jails and detention centers
- Hosting name and gender update clinics
- Training attorneys, judges, and court staff on supporting TGI people and ensuring their release to community care instead of incarceration
- Engaging in community to spread awareness
- Name & Gender Marker Change Clinics
- Visitation
- Regular correspondence with our TGI fam on the inside
Legal aid: legal mail and emergency line which responds to an average of 100 legal letters a month providing legal assistance, and 25 emergency calls a month to respond to emergent legal needs or immediate safety concerns.
Re-entry support: assistance obtaining parole by sending support letters to institutions and offering housing, and employment through placement in their re-entry program. representation for clemency applications and clemency support for release; assistance with name and gender marker updates.
