November 5, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

As we grapple with events unfolding in Gaza, conversations regarding the human right to a home, land, and safe space are growing.

The Queer Healing Arts Center’s November 2023 exhibit “Humanity, Are You My Home?” unpacks this urgent dialogue from the perspectives of eight Black and Brown Bay Area visual artists, each incorporating the work of eight human rights organizations.

Oakland, California, Saturday, November 4th, 2023 – Home can be a place, a being, a feeling, or a thing. Home is a sanctuary and a sounding board, a place rooted in acceptance, growth, and belonging. It offers space for healing and hope. We all deserve a safe space to call home. Yet, many live within the chiasm of cruel human-built borders and the redlined edges of society. So, how can humankind grow greater care and shift into a deeper state of compassion, healing, and mindfulness? How can we move away from greed and dominance towards equity and wellness? How can we become Home for one another?

November 4-28, 2023, The Queer Arts Center in Oakland, California, offers a free exhibit exploring these questions, entitled “Humanity Are You My Home?”. The interactive exhibit presents over 25 pieces of artwork created by eight Bay Area black, brown, and indigenous artists who identify as queer, trans, heterosexual, or disabled, sharing their visions and experiences of Home. An accompanying Artist Talk (moderated by Queer Arts Center CoCurator Mona Webb on November 4th, 2:30 pm-4 pm) invites viewers to embrace safe space as a universal human right, to learn more about ways that Bay Area communities seed housing justice, and to uplift practices that transform territorial tragedy into collective triumph. Art can provide a space for healing in a world seeking sanctuary. The “Humanity Are You My Home?” art exhibit draws upon the genius of creative solutions, the strength of compassion, and the power of lived experiences.
